Sofia experiences a continental climate influenced by its position in a high valley near Mount Vitosha:

How do I navigate public transit and get around?
Navigating Public Transit
Sofia’s transit system is efficient, cheap, and easily navigable:
- Paying for Rides: The easiest payment method is simply tapping your contactless debit/credit card or phone (Apple/Google Pay) on the blue validators inside vehicles or at metro gates.
- Fares: A single-ride ticket (30-minute transfer window) costs €0.80. If you tap the same card 3 or more times in a single calendar day, the fare automatically caps at €2.00 for a daily pass.
- Network Breakdown:
- Metro: 4 lines; fast and very clean. Line M4 connects Sofia Airport (Terminal 2) directly to the downtown area (Serdika Station) in under 20 minutes.
- Trams & Buses: Excellent coverage across the rest of the city.
- Taxis: Avoid hailing random street taxis. Use local ride-hailing apps like Yellow Taxi or TaxiMe for transparent meter rates. (Note: Uber does not operate in Bulgaria).
