142 years since the Liberation of Sofia from Ottoman Rule

On January 4, 2020 the Bulgarian capital will celebrate 142 years since the Liberation of Sofia from Ottoman Rule. The arrival of General Gurko in Sofia is celebrated by everybody. At 10 o’clock there will be a thanksgiving prayer at St. Nedelya church. The temple is historically linked to this event as here is the icon carried by the soldiers of Gen. Gurko on their way from Russia to Sofia. It is a copy of the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary - Joy for All Grieving, which comforts all believers. In the temple was also held the first memorial service in memory of those who died in the presence of General Gurko. At 10:30 there will be a procession to the Monument of General Gurko, the Monument to the Tsar Liberator and the Monument of the Bulgarian Volunteer and a festive ringing of the bells of the central temples along the way. Wreaths will be laid in front of the monuments. At 11:15 o’clock a literary and musical event will be held, and the guardsmen will lay wreaths at the Monument of the Bulgarian Volunteer.
