110 years since the Proclamation of the Independence of Bulgaria

On September 22, 1908 with a manifesto by the Bulgarian Knyaz Ferdinand the Independence of Bulgaria was proclaimed in Veliko Tarnovo. In this way, the last vassal ties with the Ottoman Empire were severed. The Principality of Bulgaria became an independent country ruled by Tsar Ferdinand and Turkey followed by the Great Powers accepted officially the Bulgarian independence.

Bulgaria – one of the oldest countries in Europe, was put again on the world map after five centuries of Ottoman domination. Independence Day was declared a public holiday by the National Assembly on September 10, 1998.

In Sofia the holiday will be celebrated on September 22, at 11 am in front of the Independence monument (near the National Art Gallery – the Palace, in Knyaz Alexander I Square).
