111 years since the proclamation of the Independence of Bulgaria

September 22 is a public holiday in Bulgaria – on this date in 1908, after 500 years of Ottoman Domination, Bulgaria – one of the oldest countries in Europe, once again appeared on the world map. On September 22, 1908 with a manifesto by the Bulgarian Knyaz Ferdinand the Independence of Bulgaria was proclaimed in Veliko Tarnovo. In this way, the last vassal ties with the Ottoman Empire were severed. The Principality of Bulgaria became an independent country ruled by Tsar Ferdinand. The High Porte followed by the Great Powers accepted officially the Bulgarian independence.

In Sofia this day is celebrated on September 22 at 11 am in front of the Independence monument (near the National Art Gallery).
