Day of the Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavic Script

May 24 is the Day of the Bulgarian Education and Culture and Slavic Script - a day on which the entire nation celebrates and pays homage to Cyril and Methodius - the creators of the Glagolitic alphabet. This is a writing system from the 9th century based on the Bulgarian dialect, a prototype of the Bulgarian alphabet, adapted in the Cyrillic alphabet. The Cyrillic alphabet is the Bulgarian contribution to many peoples around the world - Russians, Ukrainians, Macedonians, and Serbs. The Cyrillic alphabet is the official alphabet in Mongolia and in some republics of the former Soviet Union, and until the 19th century it was also used in Romania. On May 24 in Sofia is annually held a solemn ceremony of laying wreaths and flowers in front of the monument of the holy brothers in front of the National Library, which bears their name. In Bulgaria May 24 is also the last day of school for the students in first grade.
