Description
The Museum of Christian Art was founded in 1965. The Museum is housed in the Crypt of the St Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. In the Crypt of the cathedral there is a permanent exhibition of iconographic patterns from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance which have been collected from various parts of Bulgaria. The Museum of Christian Art is a branch of the National Gallery.
Historical Information
The National Gallery is the biggest art museum in Bulgaria. Its collection has over 42 000 art works from Bulgaria, Europe, Asia, America and Africa. Its branches are: Kvadrat 500 (luxury exposition), Palace Museum, Knyaz Alexander I Square (temporary exhibitions), Museum of Christian Art, in the Crypt of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (thematic expositions), Sofia Arsenal – Museum of Contemporary Art (temporary exhibitions), the House Museums of Nikola Tanev and Vera Nedkova.
