Sofia Remembers its Past

Wednesday, 08 November 2017

On Archangel's All Souls Day Sofia awoke remembering its past – the lion from the Memorial of First and Sixth Infantry Regiment was placed in front of the National Palace of Culture. The monument was erected 84 years ago by Boris III in honor of the over 3000 soldiers and officers who died for Bulgaria and as the location of their graves remained unknown their relatives used to come to the monument to honor their heroic act. Part of the monument was destroyed during the bombing of Sofia in World War II and in 1980 it was removed because of the construction of the National Palace of Culture. Restored to its original place the lion was visited by many people who laid flowers in front of it. This is only the first step in the restoration of the whole monument – three walls bearing the names of the soldiers who died and supporting the lion which represents their power and courage.
