On November 24, the first Chinese Cultural Center in Central and Southeastern Europe opened its doors in the center of Sofia (77 Georgi Rakovski Street). The 8-storey building covers an area of almost 4,000 square meters. Zhang Xu - Deputy Minister of Culture of China, Boil Boyanov - Minister of Culture of Bulgaria, Mrs Yordanka Fandakova – Mayor of Sofia, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Todor Chobanov - Deputy Mayor of Sofia attended the opening ceremony.
The new cultural center will have several functions – to present the uniqueness of the Chinese traditions and the contemporary achievements of the country; to develop and organize cultural activities (lectures, seminars, exchange programs, etc); to provide information and organize educational courses, exhibitions, calligraphy classes and many others. Sofia Municipality maintains a very good relationship with the Embassy of The People's Republic of China – in 2016 Sofia hosted the 16+1 meeting which aimed to encourage the cooperation between China and sixteen countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
A Bulgarian Cultural Center may also be built in China.
