The first regular airline service between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan was officially inaugurated on January 16, 2018 in the presence of ministers and official guests. The direct flights between Sofia and Baku will be operated by Buta Airways and will be conducted once a week (every Tuesday) from Terminal 2. Thus, the number of regular flight routes from Sofia Airport becomes 77. A cake prepared especially for this event was delivered with the first flight from Baku. All guests and passengers were welcomed with bread and salt (an old Bulgarian custom) and further received traditional souvenirs with rose oil. The new flight line between Baku and Sofia will provide opportunities for the further development of tourism both in Bulgaria and Azerbaijan. Sofia Airport is the largest airport in Bulgaria and in 2017 the number of passengers increased by over 30% compared to 2017.
