On January 28, 2018 Sofia Metro celebrated the 20th anniversary since the launching of the first underground line between Slivnitsa Metro Station and Konstantin Velichkov Metro Station. For a few days the passengers at Serdika II Metro Station were greeted with live music of Strauss, Lehart, Mozart, and Staynov, performances of Dixie Boys Band, Sofia Sinfonietta, Serius Theatre, Queens of the Orient, and Folk Dance Ensemble ZDRAVETS. The first metro line was opened on January 28, 1998. It was 6.4 km long and had 5 metro stations. Now, twenty years later, Sofia Metro has two metro lines with total length of 40 kilometers and the construction of the 3rd metro line is expected to be completed in 2019. The metro remains the most important transport and ecological undertaking of Sofia as thanks to it currently 75,000 tons of harmful emissions are being prevented from entering the environment every year. With the completion of the 3rd line the quantity of these gases will reach 90, 000 tons per year. Furthermore, traffic will be reduced in areas with metro stations.
Sofia Metro has another reason to celebrate – it is not only a comfortable, fast and ecological means of transportation but is also preferred by the residents because of the beautiful design of its metro stations. The most attractive stops are Serdika Metro Station (due to the exposed ancient archaeological finds), Vitosha Metro Station, Lavov Most Metro Station, and Sofia Airport Metro Station with its impressive sculpture of the Thracian singer Orpheus.
