Serdica is My Rome – the Living European Heritage in Sofia

Thursday, 22 August 2019

Each year in September, the 50 countries that have signed the European Cultural Convention join in the European Heritage Days initiative. In 2019, this initiative will be held again in Sofia on September 21 and 22, 2019. The motto of the European Heritage Days 2019 is "Arts and Entertainment" and the aim is to encourage the general public to think of our cultural heritage not as a monument of the past, but as a living heritage that is an integral part of our lives. During the European Heritage Days, more than 40 buildings of high cultural value in Sofia are expected to open their doors for visitors, and the first antique festival "Serdica is my Rome!" organized by Association for Antique Reconstruction "Mos Maiorum Ulpiae Serdicae" will also be held. The festival aims to popularize the ancient heritage of Sofia and to draw attention to the restored ancient sites - The West Gate of Serdica and Serdica Ancient Cultural and communication complex. A colorful and rich program has been prepared to acquaint the residents and guests of the city with the early history of Serdica during the reign of Emperor Constantine I the Great. The program will present significant for the period events related to Serdica, the everyday life of the residents, customs and traditions of the Romans and of the barbarian tribes that inhabited these lands.

The partners of the festival are Sofia Municipality, ROME Sofia, a study group at the Department of Roman Law at the Faculty of Law of Sofia University, Summer School of Classical Languages, reconstruction clubs from Bulgaria and abroad. The project is funded by the Culture Program of the Sofia Municipality and promises unique and different experiences!
