The Intercession of the Theotokos Pilgrimage will start on October 1 from St Petka Church in Kremikovtsi quarter, Sofia. The pilgrims will walk to the Monastery of St. George where they will take part in a solemn liturgy. This is one of the medieval Bulgarian monasteries where the murals of 1493 are an exemplar of post-Byzantine art.
Sofia Municipality has been supporting financially a serious scientific expedition in the monastery - archaeological studies regarding the earliest period of the monastery. It probably dates from the 14-15th century. There is also a necropolis from the late Middle Ages where a lot of finds were discovered. At the beginning of the 20th century, a new dome-shaped temple was built in this monastery, dedicated to the Intercession of the Theotokos. Thus, the Kremikovtsi Monastery of St. George is a rich textbook on theology and Christian history, nestled in the pine forest at the foot of the Balkan Mountains, 2 km north from Kremikovtsi.
The pilgrimage is organized by the Faculty of Theology at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski with the blessing of the Holy Metropolis of Sofia and with the support of Sofia Municipality to promote Christian worship in Bulgaria. We are awaiting you!
