Reconstruction of the route of tram line 5 has started in Sofia, which is the biggest renovation in Sofia this year. The new large-scale restoration will last until 2023 and is the last part of the project Integrated Urban Transport System, stage 2, which is worth a total of almost BGN 127 million and is implemented with the financial support of the Regions in Growth 2014-2020 Operational Programme.
The reconstruction of the tramway track along Tsar Boris III Blvd. will be carried out in two stages. On April 10, 2021, the repair of the section from Macedonia Square to Buxton’s balloon loop began. The work in this section will last for almost a year, and the project includes the construction of a linear park from Macedonia Square to the Russian Monument with landscaping, a bike lane and places for recreation.
The next stage of the reconstruction will involve the tramway track from Buxton to Knyazhevo. In addition to the replacement of the tracks, the cable network will also be replaced, new platforms and stop canopies will be built, and video surveillance will be installed.
During the repair works, trams No 4 and 5 will be replaced by buses that will service the respective routes and stops.
