The Scars of War: The Lost Architectural Heritage of Sofia

The National History Museum presents immersive space “The Scars of War: The Lost Architectural Heritage of Sofia”. The exhibition will run until end of December.

With sensory impulses, authentic video footage, photo archives and emblematic exhibits, the visitor will be “immersed” in the period before and during the bombings, will wander through the calm and beautiful pre-war Sofia, will witness the devastating blow that war inflicted on the city and will experience the fate of the hundreds people who lost their homes. The memories of eyewitnesses, recreated by famous Bulgarian actors will complete the narrative about some of the most dramatic days of the Bulgarian capital.

The project “The Scars of War: The Lost Architectural Heritage of Sofia” was brought to life in partnership with the Bulgarian National Film Archives, and funded by the “Culture” program of Sofia Municipality.

The exhibition presents the many ways that the “Pathways to the table” have evolved in Bulgaria through time. The exhibition consists of the following thematic collections: Sheep and goat breeding, Horticulture, Apiculture, and etc. With the current exhibition presents, the National Ethnographic Museum the traditional way of life and culture of Bulgarian nation. Pathways to the table will run until September 30, 2021.

The Army in Times of Change

The National Museum of Military History presents the exhibition “The Army in Times of Change”
The exhibition traces the development of the Bulgarian Army over the past 30 years. The event is realised on the occasion of the 141 st anniversary of the establishment of the Ministry of Defence and the 104 th anniversary of the foundation of the National Museum of Military History.

Three architects - jubilarians

The exhibition presents three important architects: Naum Torbov, Lazar Parashkevanov and Petso Zlatev, whose birth anniversary we celebrate in 2020. What they all have in common is that all of them received their education abroad. After that, they returned and joined the cultural and social life of Sofia.
They worked in different periods and created works that are part of the history of Bulgarian architecture. Through their work we can trace the architectural styles of the city - from neo-Byzantine, through secession, to modernism.
Among some of the most famous buildings by the three architects are the National Opera and Ballet, Lozenets Residence, the Central Sofia Market Hall, the Sofia Municipality Building at 33 Moskovska Street, Hemus Hotel, the National Assembly building (the former Party House), Georgi Asparuhov Stadium and others.

Archaeology of Sofia

Regional History Museum - Sofia presents Sixth Annual Exhibition “Archaeology of Sofia”. The exhibition will present the studies and discoveries in the territory of Sofia and the region of the past archaeological season. It will run from September 10 until December 21, 2020.

Sofia’s First Art Salon

Vaska Emanouilova Gallery presents the exhibition Sofia’s First Art Salon - The 110th Anniversary of the Trapko Gallery. The first private art salon in Sofia was called the Permanent Art Gallery and was established in the spring of 1910 by the young entrepreneur and painter Trapko Vasilev. Its existence spanned between 1910 and 1944. Trapko did not spare his enthusiasm, energy and support for the modern Bulgarian art in the interwar period.

The current exhibition includes 28 artworks. Among them are works authored by famous painters who held their shows at the Trapko Gallery – Nikola Tanev, Bencho Obreshkov, Boris Denev, Alexander Mutafov, Atanas Mihov, Petar Morozov, Konstantin Shtarkelov, Vassil Zakhariev, Doncho Zankov, Petar Ouroumov and others.

Another part of the exhibition is devoted to the painterly and artistic work of Trapko Vasilev himself.

In the process of the organization of the exhibition were also involved: The National Library, the Regional Museum of Sofia, the National Literature Museum and “Charta – Publishing and Gallery”. Photographs and archival materials were provided by the Central State Archives and the web blog “Old Sofia”.

Delya Chausheva and Gravitational Thrust - Oil paintings and drawings

Serdica Gallery presents the exhibition Gravitational Thrust - Delya Chausheva’s latest oil paintings and drawings. People will be able to visit it from September 16 to October 17, 2020 in the art space of Zhenski Pazar Market.
Visitors will see large-format oil paintings and pastel and charcoal drawings, which reveal an unsuspected world of abstract shapes and enigmatic spaces created by the artist and inspired by the wonders of the Universe, which Delya Chausheva chooses to call Gravitational Thrust while the title of the series of drawings is called “Traveling in the Shadows”.

The autumn edition of the 24th SOFIA FILM FEST will start with Milcho Manchevski's latest film "WILLOW" The famous Macedonian director will personally present his work in Sofia and will receive the special award of SFF on September 25th. Milcho Manchevski's latest work - Willow, traces women's struggles with tradition, notions of loyalty, the control exercised over their bodies, and with problems such as pregnancy and adoption. Their goal is not to change the world or the conservative society, and their personal cause - to become mothers, turns them into incredible heroines.
