May 24 - Day of the Bulgarian Education and Culture and the Slavonic Script

May 24 is the Day of the Bulgarian Education and Culture and the Slavonic Script - a day on which the entire nation celebrates and pays homage to Cyril and Methodius - the creators of the Glagolitic alphabet. This day is a reason for national pride not only because Bulgarians highly value knowledge, but also because the Cyrillic alphabet is the Bulgarian contribution to the world culture as over 200 million people use this alphabet today including Russians, Ukrainians, Macedonians, Mongolians and Serbs.

On May 24 in Sofia is annually held a solemn ceremony of laying wreaths and flowers in front of the monument of the holy brothers in front of the National Library, which bears their name. In 2018 Sts Cyril and Methodius National Library – the oldest cultural institute since the Liberation of Bulgaria and the biggest public library in the country, celebrates its 140th anniversary. At present the library holdings contain 7 808 928 library stock units most of which are in Cyrilic.
