Another stage of the modernization of Sofia Zoo, which on May 18, 2018 celebrated its 130th anniversary since it was founded by Prince Ferdinand I in 1888, has been finished. In 2017 overall renovation and modernization of the cages of the big cats was conducted and this year the expansion of the meerkat and the Old World porcupine enclosures was opened. The expansion of the primate enclosure lies ahead. The repair works were carried out in accordance with the requirements of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) so that Sofia Zoo can become its full member allowing it to exchange animals with other zoos.
On the occasion of its anniversary Sofia Zoo released a SMART application – VIPS SOFIA ZOO, which can be downloaded for free on every device and used on the territory of the zoo. This app is the only one of its kind in Europe and is an entirely Bulgarian product providing additional information about 24 animal species: photos, videos, text and audio recordings regarding their feeding, rearing and habits. For the moment all the information is in Bulgarian but an English version of the app will soon be released. The free Wi-Fi network in the Big Cats, Aquarium and Terrarium Hall and around the small predators’ enclosures will allow all visitors to learn a lot of interesting facts about the zoo inhabitants.
