Sofia has submitted its application for the title of European Capital of Tourism2027, an initiative of the European Commission recognising destinations that demonstrate innovative, responsible and forward-looking approaches to tourism development.
The application was developed by Sofia Tourism Administration | Visit Sofia with the contribution of Sofia Municipality departments, cultural institutions and partner organisations.
The application presents Sofia as a “Capital of Proximity” - a compact European capital where cultural heritage, nature, public transport, digital services and everyday urban life are closely connected and accessible to residents and visitors alike.
It highlights Sofia’s policies, achievements and long-term ambitions across the four key areas of the competition: accessibility, sustainability, digitalisation and cultural heritage and creativity.
Among the examples featured are Sofia’s integrated public transport network, measures for cleaner air and more sustainable mobility, open urban data and digital visitor services, as well as the preservation and contemporary use of the city’s rich cultural heritage.
It reflects shared vision of Sofia as a balanced, welcoming and responsible European destination - one where tourism development creates value for visitors while supporting the quality of life of the people who call the city home.
The results of the competition are expected later this year.
