On the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the founding of Sofia Zoo there will be a lot of additions – the zoo is welcoming new inhabitants, reconstructing the homes of the animals, organizing summer cinema and demonstrations of how the animals react to toys or food. The zoo has some new inhabitants – since the end of June a new Bactrian camel, which is looking for a partner, has been living there and recently several red river hogs have joined him. Since the end of July there are three new attractive species in the terrarium – a Chinese water dragon, an African spurred tortoise and a green tree python. A sloth bear – a two-meter endangered species that inhabits the forests of India and doesn’t hibernate during the winter is expected to arrive soon.
Recently the green aracaris (a type of toucan), the vultures, the mouflons and the meerkats have welcomed new members to their families. For two months now the meerkats have had a more spacious outdoor enclosure which resembles a lot their natural environment. Everyone can get more information about the inhabitants of the zoo through the mobile app VIPS SOFIA ZOO which automatically activates when you are near the zoo and if you approach a cage it gives you more information about its inhabitant – its name, age, what it eats, etc.
The zoo is open every day from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm.
