Sofia Municipality was chosen as a leading city in the URBiNAT – URBan-Innovative-NATure Project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme. There are two other cities which will also act as frontrunners - Porto (Portugal) and Nantes (France), while the cities of Brussels (Belgium), Høje-Taastrup (Denmark), Siena (Italy) and Nova Gorica (Slovenia) will act as followers.
Horizon 2020 Programme provides grants for “green” solutions to the three leading cities in the project. With the active involvement of civil society, each partner city has to propose projects involving innovative, environmentally friendly solutions in four areas - Energy, Water, Environment and Organic Farming, which will form an urban “healthy” corridor. As a comprehensive, environmentally friendly solution, the corridor will combine infrastructure elements with urban community initiatives which will take place on a specific territory. Sofia Municipality will have to select an area, to design and build Sofia’s healthy corridor and to identify the project ideas that would be implemented. The project will be carried out in partnership with the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodes and Sofia Development Association.
The planned activities should be implemented within 5 years.
